Reading Series Sessions
One of the Najiba Library programs is to conduct reading sessions in the Library to encourage students to studying books. This initiative was initiated by the Library due to the low quality of formal education in Afghanistan. According to some research, more than 30 percent of the students of Grades 10-12 in Afghanistan schools (formal education) do not have basic reading and writing skills. Thus, the Library aims to promote self-education as solution to this problem.
The Library has formed several reading groups in different age groups including a kid’s reading group. These reading groups regularly conduct their reading sessions in the Library.
So far, each of the groups held four reading sessions and these will be continuing in the future. The sessions are structured so they each participant studies one book in advance and then shares their understanding of the selected book with the group. Each member of this group has the chance to exchange their point of view and debate about the topic or challenge each other. The reading sessions will also help them to build their networks in the community and learn from each other.
